Lil Spade (Justin Williams) and Putty G (Tomarquis TJ Godfrey) are the rap duo known as Sum Serious. They come out with hard hitting lyrics that speak to the soul of the southern rap community and continue to bang out the realness of the south. Growing up, the two artists seemed to live different lifestyles.

Lil Spade, growing up with a father in the military, seemed to live the life that everything was handed to him. On the outside, he seemed to be an individual who didn't have a care in the world and could have anything he wanted at the drop of a hat. On the inside, however, he yearned for more than that. He wanted to be able to prove he could stand on his own and not have to worry about something being given to him. He began to explore his life when he reached the town of Columbus, Mississippi. There he met people who lived the lives that rappers today often talk about: Living in poor conditions, having to fend for yourself and make every peice of change you could, working for something that seemed to be far away. Around that time, Lil Spade felt that he could do more with his life and found it in something he didn't think would ever come his way. Hanging out with his friends at school , he learned to develop a love for rap music and one day found himself chillin in the lunchroom where people were having rap battles and everyone voted who was the best. It was his best friend that convinced him to try though he had never rapped, much less freestyled, before. It turns out people found his flows captivating. He looked like a guy who couldn't rap but in actuality he could spit on the mike just as good as a well known rapper. This is what brought him to the rap game.Lil Spade's style incorporates both the light and dark side of life. Coming from the side where everything is given to you and bringing the real side of the street life he experienced and mixing it with his own outlook on life. At first, he thought he would try it out for fun but soon found himself in love with the music and then he met up with Putty G.

Putty G, being a native of Altanta, GA, also had a love for rap music. As a young kid, he often used to listen to rap music and fell in love at a younger age than Lil Spade. He even made a demo at the age of 14. His style mixed together his dirty south roots, with real and untoned life stories. This caused him to tell a story that started off good, but then slowly intergrated into a harsh reality of the fairy tales people spin, and then ending with a life lesson learned that you have to continue to fight for what you want. Nothing ever came easy for him, losing his cousin, his family splitting, and things just going downhill. Rap music was his escape into this world he could call his own and mold it into what he wanted from life. His persona and personal experiences taught him lessons that he passes on to others through his music.

Putty G and Lil Spade met when both of their girlfriends introduced them to each other. Together, they traded stories of how they came to love rap music and even freestyled together with each other. From there, Sum Serious was born and the legacy began. They started off just rapping outside of stores and trying to catch attention but to no avail. Then once they managed to scrap some money together and get some equipment, they began to bang out hits. Their self titled song Sum Serious was a big hit in their city, even without no type of radio play whatsoever. Then they came up wtih I Ain't Gon Lie, Naw, Never That, and Don't Run Ya Mouth Off. Each song brings something new to everything that you know about life. With the self titled Sum Serious, the duo introduced a new style of music they developed from the inspiration of Screwed and Chopped music. They keep the beat the same speed but warp the voices of their lyrics and made a new style. The Sum Serious song came out with the mind set that people can't keep you from doing what you wanna do and you will rise above the hatred and bringing down of people that don't want you to better yourself. These two artists have proved that you can come from different backgrounds and find unique and common ground among each other to make something great.
